This splendid image of a Maya woman weaver—perhaps the goddess Ixchel—spinning her thread represents the hopes of the indigenous people for the creation of a lasting peace, after more than three decades of war. The woman's graceful figure unites the earth with the lake and sky, both of which have taken on the color of human skin. The peace accords of 1996, aided by the presence of UN observers, brought an end to the genocidal civil war. | |
